At My Dentist, general dentist Christine Hervas, DDS, regularly uses dentures to restore smiles and encourage optimal oral health. Dentures are removable prosthetics that replace your teeth and some of the surrounding tissue. They reduce the risk of potentially serious oral health problems, like gum recession and bone decay.
Dentures aren’t as sturdy as dental implants, but with routine maintenance, they often last 7-10* years and sometimes even longer. If you’re interested in seeing if you qualify for dentures, make an appointment at My Dentist today.
At My Dentist, Dr. Hervas offers several types of dentures:
Partial dentures replace several permanent teeth. A partial denture looks like an orthodontic retainer. It features a metal base and one (or several) false teeth. Partial dentures fit snugly around your existing teeth, allowing you to bite and chew confidently.
Complete dentures replace an entire row of teeth. They feature a metal base that looks like a horseshoe, pink gums made from acrylic or plastic, and artificial teeth. Complete dentures can replace your bottom arch, upper arch, or both.
Implant retained dentures are similar to complete dentures. The difference is that they attach to dental implants instead of resting on top of your gums. Implant retained dentures don’t need to be removed each night. Instead, you brush them like your permanent teeth.
At My Dentist, getting partial or complete dentures takes two appointments.
If you want partial or complete dentures, Dr. Hervas takes digital impressions of your mouth and sends your impressions to a dental facility. Technicians at the facility use your impressions to design and manufacture a partial or a complete denture that fits your mouth perfectly.
When the dental facility completes your dentures, you return to My Dentist. Dr. Hervas has you try them on and makes adjustments as necessary.
If you choose to get implant-retained dentures, Dr. Hervas coordinates your implant placement with the team at 8118 Dental Professionals.
Following the placement procedure, you return to My Dentist and Dr. Hervas takes digital impressions of your mouth. Then, a dental facility manufactures a custom pair of implant-retained dentures.
When your dentures are finished, Dr. Hervas attaches them to your implants and provides care instructions.
Caring for dentures depends on the type of dentures you have. If you have partial or complete dentures, rinse them in cool tap water after each meal and soak them in an approved cleaning solution when you go to bed.
If you have implant-retained dentures, treat them like your natural teeth. Dr. Hervas recommends brushing twice daily and visiting My Dentist every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
