Veneers refer to ultra-thin, semi-translucent, tooth-colored shells or coating that are permanently bonded to the tooth surface to improve the appearance of chipped, discolored, or damaged teeth. Veneers are usually recommended as a cosmetic dental treatment to completely alter the shape and size of your teeth, ultimately transforming your smile.
What to Expect
Porcelain veneers are used as an alternative treatment for crowns to restore damaged teeth. The dentist will determine whether you are a good candidate. Basically you should have healthy teeth and gums to ensure that the dentist gets the right fit to cover the entire front surface of the damaged tooth or teeth.
If you are a suitable candidate:
- The dentist will shed off a small amount of tooth enamel to create enough room for the new veneer to be bonded to your tooth. This helps to create a suitable surface for bonding to occur, and ensures that the dental restoration looks and feels like your natural teeth.
- Next the dentist will take an impression of each tooth to create custom veneers that fit perfectly over the tooth. This increases the chances of successful bonding to the host tooth. The color of the veneer is closely matched to the look of the surrounding teeth to create a uniform look. At this point, you can also choose a different shade to make your smile brighter.
- When the veneers are ready, the temporary veneers are removed and a strong cement used to bond the final veneer to the tooth, providing a restoration that is comparable in strength to normal teeth.
